At any time of the year we can suffer from coughs, colds, mucus, congestion, angina, hoarseness, etc. How about preparing your own natural syrups to combat these symptoms and boost your defenses?

In this article we explain how you can prepare these syrups with natural ingredients at home, both to prevent and fight diseases.

Learn how to prepare a flax syrup, an onion syrup, and an orange and turmeric syrup.

Homemade syrups

Syrups have sugar as a traditional ingredient, as a preservative. Today we recommend using honey , cane honey or brown sugar instead of white sugar.

These sweeteners are more nutritious and beneficial. In the following recipes we will refer to the sweetener, understanding that each person will choose the one that suits them best.

Conservation of syrups

Once we have the syrups ready, we will keep them in a hermetically closed and preferably dark glass container (or wrapped so that light does not enter directly), in the refrigerator.

Since they do not contain more preservatives than sugar or honey, we recommend consuming them within a maximum of two weeks. As they are easy to prepare, the most practical thing is to prepare them just when we need them.

Recommended dose

The recommended dose is:

  • a tablespoon on an empty stomach as prevention
  • three tablespoons daily, before meals, as an intensive treatment.

We always recommend consulting a doctor before carrying out any treatment, even if it is natural.

Flax syrup

This syrup is especially recommended for when we suffer from a dry or nervous cough, and it will also help us a lot if we also suffer from constipation.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons flax seeds
  • Lemon juice
  • Sweetener

Preparation

  1. We will soak the flax seeds in a cup of water overnight.
  2. In the morning, we will strain the seeds.
  3. We will mix the water with the same amount of lemon juice and the sweetener.

The seeds that we have left over can be used to add them to other recipes: soups, stews, pasta, salads, tortillas, etc.

Onion syrup

This is a natural remedy that allows us to benefit from the multiple properties of the onion. We also recommend it for those who suffer from all kinds of coughs or begin to suffer from cold symptoms.

Ingredients

  • Onions
  • Water
  • Sweetener

Preparation

  1. We will cut the onions into small pieces.
  2. We will mix them with the same amount of water and half of the sweetener that we have chosen.
  3. We will put the mixture in a covered pot that we will cook over medium heat for three hours.
  4. Next, we will strain the liquid and we will have the syrup ready.

This syrup is delicious and helps us fight all kinds of diseases, so we suggest you prepare a good amount.

In addition, turmeric is a very beneficial spice, with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of organic orange juice and its peel
  • One tablespoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 kg of sweetener

Preparation

  1. We will put the juice, turmeric and sweetener to cook in a large enough saucepan.
  2. When it starts to boil, we will stop the fire and let it warm.
  3. When it is not so hot, we will add the orange peel grated or cut into very small pieces.
  4. We will let it marinate for 24 hours.
  5. The next day we will strain it and we will be able to bottle it.

Infallible advice

Finally, we can add some more ingredient to our homemade syrup to enhance its effects. We recommend the following:

  • A few drops of propolis, which will help us to raise our defenses in general
  • Ginger powder: ideal for eliminating mucus, giving heat to the body and reducing fever
  • Oregano essential oil (for oral use): this oil helps us eliminate possible pathogens from our body. Just add a couple of drops to the syrup and shake it well, as it has a very strong flavor and can be irritating if we take more quantity.
  • Cinnamon powder: another spice with multiple stimulating and aphrodisiac properties.
