Amazing! A Capsule Is Created That Will Treat Several Diseases For Months In A Single Dose

Imagine for a moment that, thanks to a single capsule, you could treat your cholesterol, your hypertension, your anemia problems or the numbness of your hands for fifteen days in a row.

We find it amazing, without a doubt, and even more so if we think about the small pharmaceutical complexity that sometimes involves organizing treatments for those patients with chronic diseases who are forced to take several pills a day.

To imagine that with a single administration we could treat multiple ailments during a certain time is something encouraging. However, it has already been achieved.

It has been done by two prestigious centers that have collaborated on this same project: Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston (USA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (USA).

It must be said that at first the objective of the scientists was another: to offer a new treatment for malaria.

They were looking for a way to administer the drug in a single dose. Thus, it seems that they have not only succeeded. They have also opened the doors to new possibilities in the field of medicine and the treatment of chronic diseases.

We explain it to you below.

A “multipurpose” capsule

All those people who suffer from chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis know that for the drug to take effect, it is necessary to take “that pill” determined daily.

If we forget one or if we take it every other day, the effect fails. What is known as “adherence” to treatment does not occur .

This problem is common, for example, in older people. If there are no others who organize the drugs and offer them the dose every day, they may forget.

With this type of daily realities that we all know, we will understand, without a doubt, the advance of the following technique.

A pill that transforms

long-lasting capsule

The present work was published in the journal of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At first, those responsible for the research, led by Dr. C. Giovanni Traverso, were looking, as we have already indicated, a new way of treating malaria.

  • This disease so present in many third world countries requires several doses for the effect to be adequate. Something like this supposes an economic expense and enormous difficulties in terms of management.
  • The scientists succeeded. They designed a “multipurpose” capsule that, once in the stomach, unfolds almost like a little robot.
  • It increases in size so as not to leave the stomach itself and thus not reach the small intestine. In this way it does not interfere with the absorption of nutrients or the elimination of waste products.

The pylorus is the valve that separates the stomach from the intestine. It measures two centimeters.

This capsule, upon reaching the stomach, expands by 4 centimeters to acquire a star shape and remain there for as long as possible (later it degrades on its own and disappears).

This pill contains ivermectin. It is actually a type of antiparasitic, which together with different polymers, achieves something amazing: that the drugs are released very little by little.

A great future ahead

doctor

Today this ivermectin pill will treat both malaria and a wide group of tropical diseases. All those that can develop with mosquito bites are included.

It’s hopeful. For now, those responsible for the study tell us that once the patient ingests the capsule, they will receive all these treatments over 15 days.

The goal is to achieve 3 months.

Seeing the very positive results achieved in the essential objective of this research (treating malaria), it will also begin to combine other types of drugs to respond to the most common chronic diseases (cholesterol, hypertension, chronic pain …).

Thinking of a future in which only with a pill we could treat our ailments for at least 3 months would undoubtedly change several things:

  • Pharmaceutical spending would be reduced (hopefully this data is not a problem for the companies themselves).
  • Patients would receive their treatments in a more effective way without having to keep an eye on the feedings.
  • We would get a new medical approach to treating infections, and even psychiatric problems.

Hopefully we can see these developments in no time. We will be pending.
