Vaccines are a good way to prevent, but they also cure diseases. Therefore, it is not unreasonable for researchers to analyze different possibilities for ending up with cancers as aggressive as brain cancer. But what if there is already a vaccine?

The Brain Cancer Vaccine
In the newspaper El País a news item was published in December 2018 that talked about personalized vaccines for patients suffering from brain cancer. This was done in a study conducted with few people that reported quite encouraging results.
However, because the number of subjects who participated in the test were few, the researchers do not dare to affirm with force that they have been able to find the cure for this type of cancer. More research needs to be done to ensure the veracity of the evidence.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a highly relevant concept in this recently discovered vaccine. This term refers to the use of the body’s own defenses to direct them and attack brain cancer.
However, the researchers found that not all tumors are exactly the same, and they do not all respond well to immunotherapy treatment. For this reason, a “precision immunotherapy” has been worked on to treat patients suffering from glioblastoma.
Personalized vaccine
Glioblastoma is one of the cancers with the worst prognosis. Therefore, the patients who suffered from it at the time of the study needed a personalized vaccine for the results to be favorable. But how do you do this?
The best way is to design a vaccine with antigens from the patient’s own tumor. This favors a much more effective immune response. Well, lymphocytes manage to recognize “bad” cells and destroy them.
In the research, they found that patients responded favorably to the personalized vaccine and not to the generic one. Well, it is not useful that this is designed for any type of tumor. To end brain cancer, the vaccine must be personalized.
Expectations for brain cancer
The advances that are being made regarding different types of cancer, and specifically brain cancer, are quite encouraging. However, only 30 people participated in the aforementioned study.
This can also make us wonder if it would be feasible to study and create a personalized vaccine for each person with brain cancer. Is this feasible? Would its cost be accessible to all people?
In addition, it is important to mention that the research failed to destroy the cancer of the people who suffered from it. Although it is important to emphasize that they suffered from a fairly aggressive type of cancer with a high mortality rate, despite the treatments that were carried out.
What was achieved was to increase the survival rate. According to what the newspaper El País told us , these patients normally last about 14 months. However, the vaccine allowed this number to rise to 29 months. Without a doubt, an encouraging figure that indicates that he is going on the right track and that, perhaps, the definitive cure is near.
At present, researchers continue to study different possibilities of ending this type of disease that, every year, takes thousands of people ahead. We hope that, sooner than expected, we will receive news about a vaccine that will completely eradicate the cancer disease.
