Veggie Bean Burger

Currently being a vegetarian is easier than ever, because as more and more people join the movement there are also more variations and substitutes that we can use. This is how you can make a veggie bean burger.

Black beans turn out to be a perfect substitute for meat, as they have a high protein content and their texture is very viable when making them into a hamburger. In addition, an advantage of using this kind of beans is that they have a good amount of fiber, providing very few calories in the process.

Ingredients for the veggie burger

  • One cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of baby corn
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 small chili pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups black beans
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • chilli powder
  • 1 tablespoon of cumin

Preparation

To get everything ready

The first thing you should do is prepare all your ingredients for later incorporation.

  1. Start by cooking the beans in a little water, you can add a cube of chicken broth to give them flavor. Once you have your beans ready, put them to drain and set them aside.
  2. Apart, peel and slice the onion and finely chop the garlic. Reserve separately to use later.
  3. Pour the flour in a plate and spread it, it will be useful for later.

Time to cook

  1. Proceed to fry the onion in a tablespoon of oil, also add the oregano, garlic and chili.
  2. When  the onion is transparent add the minced chili pepper without seeds. Let everything sauté for about 2 minutes over low heat and then reserve for later.
  3. In a deep bowl, mash the beans well until they are pureed.
  4. Sauté all the other vegetables in a frying pan, chopping them finely and then adding them to the beans.
  5. Pour in the corn, parsley, bread, and cumin. Incorporate everything very well, until you have a more or less consistent dough.

Now to shape the veggie burger

  1. Part your mixture into balls about the size of a ping pong ball, flatten them to look like hamburger meat and finish by putting them on the plate where you had the flour, covering each part of your preparation very well.
  2. In a frying pan, heat another tablespoon of oil and fry the burgers until golden brown.
  3. Ready, your burgers are ready.

Now, to give them a more traditional touch, use this vegetarian burger to fill a round bun, add the sauces that are to your liking and that’s it, a delicious and vegetarian dish.

Additional tips

  • Not all hamburgers may fit in the same skillet, so it is advisable to prepare them in batches to prevent them from sticking or falling apart.
  • If you want to save time, you can use canned beans.
  • If you use fresh beans, before cooking them you must have left them submerged in water for at least 12 hours before preparation.
  • Remember that when you sauté the vegetables, the ideal thing is that you stir them to prevent them from cooking on one side and remaining raw on the other, burning or sticking.
  • To make the process of pureeing the beans easier, we recommend using a fork.
  • Keep in mind that when you handle chili, the itch of it can transfer to your hands, therefore we advise you to spread the tips of your fingers in a little oil, or wear rubber gloves when handling the chili.
  • You can add more spice to the recipe by incorporating the seeds into it.
  • You can alter the size of your veggie burger by making smaller or larger balls of the dough. If you want to serve them as an appetizer, you can make small ones and serve them together on a plate around a container with sauce.
